NYSPRA Award-winning photo, “Future Scientists” featuring Moriches Elementary School students discovering the wonders of science.
The William Floyd School District has recently received two New York School Public Relations Association (NYSPRA) awards in the organization’s 36th annual Communications Contest earning one Excellence award (first place) in the Social Media Category and an “Honor” award (second place) for photography. William Floyd is the only school district in Suffolk County to win a NYSPRA award.
The Excellence award was presented to the district for its use of social media through five separate platforms (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and flickr). The judges commented on the strong use of photographs and the use of social media to connect with district residents and various stakeholders. One judge wrote, “Visuals and graphics are very strong throughout all platforms, and loved the use of photos particularly on Facebook/Twitter. With five different platforms, it’s clear social media has become an integral part of the district’s communication strategy.” Another judge concurred, “Excellent job of integrating social media into their communications plan. Great job of connecting with district constituents.”
In the photography category, the district won for a photo entitled “Future Scientists,” which depicted two elementary school students showing genuine excitement about the world of science. One judge wrote, “This is a well taken photo; well composed and demonstrates its intention…good use of depth of field.” Another judge wrote, “Nice shot with emotion of something that is very hard to shoot (microscopes). Nice job.”
Each year, NYSPRA sponsors annual communications awards to recognize and celebrate outstanding achievement in educational communications. The awards contest continues to be one of the largest in the nation and provides both members and non-members with a time to shine and an opportunity to showcase exemplary communication practices. Statewide awards provide recognition for outstanding work; they also build a greater appreciation for the skills of school public relations professionals and promote a better understanding of the broad range of services rendered by education-related communications professionals.
