William Floyd Middle School Spelling bee champion Ian Hua spells a word in an early round.
William Floyd Middle School sixth grader Ian Hua recently captured first place in the second annual William Floyd Middle School PTO Spelling Bee, a competition among approximately 40 of the school’s top spellers. The competition lasted seven exciting rounds before Ian correctly spelled the winning word, “paragon,” for the title.
With this victory, Ian has qualified for the Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee on March 13 and will square off against the top spellers in fourth through eighth grade from Nassau and Suffolk counties for a chance to compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee, with takes place annually during Memorial Day week in Washington D.C.
Eighth grader Corie Crews came in second and will serve as Ian’s alternate if he is unable to compete; and seventh grader Charlie Cowan placed third.
The William Floyd Middle School Spelling Bee is sponsored by the PTO, which pays the entrance fee for the winner to participate in the Hofstra Long Island Regional Scripps Spelling Bee.
